Mediation brings together individuals or institutions involved in a dispute to meet in a neutral environment, discuss concerns, and reach effective solutions. Services are free and confidential, and mediation works: 80% of our clients are satisfied with the results of their mediations!
Civil Matters: Debt, personal, business, and property issues both in and out of Civil Court.
Housing: Neighbor, roommate, and landlord-tenant issues like noise, rent, repairs, maintenance, and security deposits.
Family: Parenting (school attendance, behavior), co-parenting (custody and visitation), and end-of-life concerns (elder care, inheritance).
Disability Matters: Conflicts between people with disabilities and service-providers like the Department of Education (Special Education), Early Intervention, and VESID.
Criminal Matters: Victims and offenders address minor offenses, misdemeanors, violations, and low-level felonies.
Workplace: Employee, employer, and co-worker concerns such as working conditions, pay, career development, and performance.
Community: Land use, racial or ethnic tensions, and environmental concerns.
Mediation Works
With mediation, everyone wins!
Mediation can help you get what you need, whether it’s a financial settlement, peace and quiet, or just a chance to be heard. Over 80% of the people who use our services report being very satisfied with the mediation process and their outcome. Our clients tell us they would use us again and would refer their friends to the Safe Horizon Mediation Program.
You create your own solutions.
Most of the time, the parties reach agreements. Mediation empowers people to create effective resolutions of their own making. The mediator does not impose opinions and decisions like a judge, but rather enables the parties to discuss their viewpoints and generate new options.
Mediation improves communication.
Mediation offers you an opportunity to say what you need to say and to better understand the other party. By improving communication, mediation can support cooperation and collaboration.
Mediation is confidential.
Mediation allows you to discuss your concerns with the other party in a safe, supportive, and private setting; nothing communicated in mediation can be used as evidence or testimony in court.
It’s free and easy.
There is no cost to mediation and setting up an appointment is quick and simple, with convenient hours and accessible locations. Mediation can help you avoid the uncertainty, time, and expense of a lawsuit, but does not prevent you from trying other options like court at any point.
